During the aging process our face will gradually loose volume, ie fat. This is the reason why patients who have a full face when they are young, often look younger than their peers when they get older. Basically, because they had more facial fat to begin with. The fatty volume loss is influenced not only by genetics, but also by environmental factors like smoking or hormonal changes. Women often notice in their late 30’s, early 40’s, a volume loss in the lower parts of their cheeks.The fatty tissue is stored in distinct deep and superficial compartments in our face. Over time the fatty tissue decreases and the overlying skin has less volume support. Consequently the skin elasticity decreases, resulting in facial lines, sagging and a hollow appearance. The volume loss does not only affect the cheeks, often areas just below the eyebrow, temples, lips, and lateral orbital wall area are affected as well.

Am I a Candidate for Lipofilling?

Patients having facial wrinkles, like crows feet, smile lines, volume loss of their cheeks, temples, upper eyelids, lips, visible infraorbital rim, dark circles of the lower eyelid are usually good candidates for fat transfer procedures. Since only a small amount of fat needs to be harvested, facial fat transfer is an excellent procedure even in lean patients.

How Is a Fat Transfer Performed?

Fat is harvested from an area of your body using liposuction. The fat will then be purified and carefully transferred. The harvesting process can be either done using a local anesthetic or in combination with another surgical procedure, when you are already under general anesthesia. Unfortunately, your harvested fat cannot be frozen or stored, therefore, a fat transfer may have to be repeated. The cells would not survive the freezing and thawing process. Like in other human tissues, storage at an official tissue bank may become available in the future. After the lipofilling expect some bruising and swelling of the donor and recipient site which will gradually subside.
