Which Lip Enhancement Is Right for Me?

This is actually more complex, than most patients think. Most patient think, just to get some fillers, and a thin lip can be changed into full „Angelina Jolie lips“. Unfortunately this is usually not the case. This can result in looking “done” and “injected,” which is often considered as unattractive. Based on your anatomy and personal desires, Dr. Bianca Knoll will help you find the right procedure to enhance your lips. Some of the methods used by Dr. Knoll are filler, fat transfer and dermal graft.

Lip Filler Injection

Fillers are made from biocompatible material serving as a substitute to enhance the volume of your lips. Most of the times one treatment is sufficient to obtain the desired result. HA fillers will be degraded by your body over time to some degree. Therefore the results of your lip enhancement may be temporary and may require repeat injections or touch up’s. Lip enhancement using filler injections will increase the already preexisting volume of the red part of the lips. The filler will not change the upper border / contour of your lips, but a fuller look of your lips can be achieved. Lips will appear more plum, without looking „done“. HA lip fillers are temporary and can be modified to your preference, based on the aesthetic proportions between your upper and lower lip, and even reduce dental show („toothy look) when smiling. Sometimes some pre existing asymmetries can be corrected, or at least improved. Any type of lip enhancement will not be able to change how the lips are moving while you are talking or smiling. Lip movement is dependent on the animation of the facial mimic muscles. Facial mimics or an underlying asymmetry of your facial bones can be responsible for some asymmetry during facial animation, therefore will not change with filler.

Fat Transfer Lip Enhancement

To use your own fat instead of fillers differs to some degree. Although it only makes sense to restore tissue with alike tissue, there are some distinct differences from using fillers. Fat transfer or lipofilling is usually used to restore volume. However, over the past decades fat grafting has undergone a renaissance in aesthetic and reconstructive surgery. It was noted that adipose tissue encompasses mesenchymal stem cells. Although the regenerative process is still not fully understood, the positive regenerative effect onto the surrounding tissue is well recognized. The overlying skin quality, lines and scars improve. Enriched fat transfer takes this a step further by supplementing a patients own regenerative cells to create a natural filler. Lipofilling transfers vital tissue and is therefor quiet different from any HA filler. The transferred fat cells are vital cells, and will act as such. Sometimes injections may need to be repeated until the desired result is achieved. Fat transfer is a small procedure performed safely under local anesthesia, where your own fat is taken from another area of your body using small cannulas. The so gained adipose tissue can be processed in different ways to serves different needs.

Dermal Graft – Lip Enhancement

An often forgotten, but very powerful method in the decade of lip fillers and lip injections, is the usage of dermal grafts for lip enhancement. Using a dermal graft will use your own collagen and give you a long lasting mild to moderate enhancement of your lips. The graft (deep layer of your skin – collagen scaffold) is commonly taken in an area of an old scar (for example appendectomy or C-section scar) and crafted to the patients individual need. The dermal graft will then be placed by 2 small inconspicuous incision near the corners of the lip (within the lip red). This lip enhancement procedure is well tolerated and is usually performed under local anesthesia and nerve blocks (similar seeing a dentist). Many patients appreciate the fact that they got a complimentary scar revision using this lip enhancement method. In cases where there is no previous scar, this method may not be an option. Alternatively, for patients wishing to pursue a dermal graft, donor site incisions could be placed in inconspicuous areas for those with no previous scar.
