What is a Short Scar Arm Lift?

A short-scar arm lift is a brachioplasty procedure with a less visible scar placed in the armpit and is combined with liposuction. This combination allows in many cases to avoid a scar along the upper arm. The short-scar arm lift procedure is an advanced technique of brachioplasties allowing reshaping and contouring of the upper arms with a less conspicious scar. The best candidates for a short-scar arm lift with liposuction are patients with a good to moderate skin elasticity and amounts of fatty tissue.

Am I a Candidate for a Brachioplasty Procedure?

If liposuction of the upper arm will not be sufficient enough to correct the excess skin you are a candidate for an arm lift. Successful liposuction contouring relies on good skin elasticity. Therefore liposuction only procedures are often an option for younger patients with minimal to no loose skin and mild to moderate amounts of fatty tissue.

Short Scar Arm Lift

The short-scar arm lift is a great procedure for patients with moderate amounts of excess skin and fatty tissue who have still some good skin turgor (elasticity). This is often the case in patients who have undergone some weight loss, or being in their 40’s to 50’s undergoing some age related changes. A short-scar arm lift is a very powerful procedure if combined with liposuction of the upper arms.

Traditional Brachioplasty

A traditional arm lift will remove severe skin excess of the upper arms after massive weight loss. A traditional brachioplasty can be extended to the lateral chest wall, or combined with liposuction as well to correct additional loose skin or fat in that area. The incision of a traditional brachioplasty goes along the entire upper arm and if extended, along the lateral chest wall.

Some patients are not ideal candidates for one of these 3 options. What to Expect During a Brachioplasty ?

Many advancements have been made in brachioplasty procedures regarding efficiency, improved pain control, safety, lesser morbidity, and wound care. An arm lift is usually performed under general anesthesia and takes between 2-4 hours depending on your case. Most brachioplasty procedures are performed without using drains. In very rare circumstances JP-drains will be used. A brachioplasty can be performed safely in an ambulatory setting. Depending if the arm lift is combined with other procedures, your general health, and your personal comfort, an overnight stay in the hospital might be preferred to monitor your recovery and to provide adequate pain control. After your brachioplasty procedure you will wear a garment for about 6 weeks supporting your wound healing process. After your brachioplasty you will have some swelling and bruising, which gradually subsides within the following weeks. During that time Dr Knoll and her team will see you regularly in her Frankfurt office to accompany you during the wound healing process. You will be limited in your physical activities during your immediate post-operative period to ensure adequate wound healing. Given all the possible variations of a brachioplasty procedure, it is quiet difficult to provide any estimated costs without having examined and talked to the patient. The costs of the surgery will vary depending on the complexity, length of the procedure and the details involved.
