WHAT IS A PROFILE-PLASTY? RHINOPLASTY AND CHIN SURGERY?
A profile-plasty is most commonly perceived as a combined surgery of the nose and chin. This usually entails a rhinoplasty and chin surgery, ie genioplasty or chin implants. The underlying facial bones can also be altered in order to obtain a change in profile. In modern, advanced aesthetic plastic surgery a profile-plasty considers the forehead, the lips, and the neck. In order to obtain a harmonious, aesthetically balanced appearance. All these areas need to be assessed and discussed prior any medical or surgical intervention.
AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR A PROFILE-PLASTY?
Patients generally do not ask for a profile-plasty when scheduling a consultation with Dr. Bianca Knoll in our Aesthetic Plastic Surgery office in Frankfurt Patients are often coming in with a specific area of concern, like the nose, the chin, the lips, or the forehead. Commonly, they request a specific surgical procedure, like a rhinoplasty, chin surgery, neck lift, lip enhancement, or forehead reduction / forehead contouring.
During the consultation patients quiet often mention that they are unhappy with their side view, and that they avoid having photographs taken of their profile. Just to give you an example. Sometimes a rhinoplasty itself will be very sufficient in balancing the facial profile. However, in some cases it is not the nose that is either too big or too small, it is the chin that is disproportionate. In a case like this, the patient will benefit from a genioplasty / chin surgery. Sometimes even a neck lift / platysmaplasty is needed to achieve a more balanced and proportionate appearance. There are also patients who may benefit from both, a rhinoplasty and for example a sliding genioplasty or a chin implant, which is which is considered the “classic profile-plasty.” In advanced aesthetic plastic surgery attention is paid to more facial features in greater detail. A profile-plasty entails the transition of the nose to the forehead. The shape and the inclination of the forehead are an important aesthetic feature on a youthful feminine or masculine appearance. Minor changes, like the upper lip length and lip fullness can make quiet a difference aiming for a superior result.
During your consultation Dr Knoll will carefully listen to your concerns, examine you and thoroughly analyse your facial features. She will then discuss this with you, and explain your available options. The ideal profile-plasty candidates are healthy patients seeking improvement, but not „Adobe Photoshop like“ perfection of their appearance or changing their complete appearance. Dr Knoll will explain to you very honest about realistic expectations, obtainable results, potential risks and benefits associated with a profile-plasty procedure.
Dr Knoll performs a comprehensive preoperative facial analysis to understand your underlying facial anatomy and its proportions to each other. The goal of a profile-plasty procedure is to balance proportions not only from a front view. This is a critical step, since the relationship of your nose to the underlying facial bone structures, like your chin, cheekbones, and forehead play an important role in creating an aesthetically pleasing, harmonious result. As important the facial bone structures are in a profile-plasty, is the overlying soft tissue. Additional procedures correcting the age related changes of the neck, around the mouth and the lips enhance the results leading to a refined appearance.
Medical photographs will be performed. The computer imaging is a service part of Dr Bianca Knoll, for our profile-plasty patients, when they visit her for a consultation in her Frankfurt office. After your consultation appointment, you will receive several computer simulations, based on Dr Knoll’s analysis and your goals that had been discussed. The imaged simulations will serve as an educational tool, to help you to understand your options and facial proportions, and to discuss your preferences. You will also receive further information about any type of preoperative testing required and additional information about the procedure.
The approach in modern profile-plasty is not to perform a standardized surgical procedure, than rather taking an individual approach addressing the patients personal and anatomical needs. This is where the craniofacial background of Dr Knoll will work in your favor, not only being able to diagnose those features, but also being able to surgically alternate them if necessary.
ONE DAY PROCEDURE OR HOSPITAL STAY
The success of a profile-plasty procedure is clearly dependent on the meticulous planning and skilled surgical performance of your surgery. Your profile-plasty procedure will be performed under general anesthesia, and will take a few hours. Depending on your general health, length and type of the procedure and your personal comfort an overnight stay in the hospital might be necessary. We are happy to provide you with further information about the procedure and answer your questions during your consultation in Dr Knoll’s office.
Unfortunately, it is quiet difficult to provide any estimated costs of a profile-plasty without having examined and talked to the patient. This is probably easy to understand given the variety of procedure that can be involved in a profile-plasty. The costs of the surgery may vary depending on the complexity, length of the procedure and the details involved. Usually there are 3 different costs associated with a surgery: the surgeon’s fee, hospital fee and anesthesia fee.
After your consultation, Dr Bianca Knoll’s office in Frankfurt, will provide you with a detailed cost proposal including all these 3 different costs. During an office consultation with Dr. Knoll you will be thoroughly examined, allowing us to provide you with information pertaining o surgery, post-operative expectations and cost associated with your individualized surgery plan. For these reasons a consultation in our Frankfurt office is strongly encouraged. We understand that it can be impractical for some of our out of town/ international patients to travel to Frankfurt for an initial consultation. For this reason, Dr. Knoll offers online consultations. By submitting a series of photographs, information about your desired outcome, and a little about yourself, we can start to determine if you are a good candidate. For these reason Dr Knoll’s office offers the possibility of an online consultation. Though a virtual consultation starts the conversation, it does have it’s limitations and does not replace the need to be seen in person for a traditional consultation to finalize plans for a procedure.
